Career Change Causing Problems

Gaps in an employement are a threat to your resume but that cannot be helped. What is done is done. There are a few ways to present the work experience so that the gaps are not much apparent.

* You have to consider only the years of work.
* You can place the dates of employment next to the job titles.
* You can think about what other work you did during those years when you did not work. You can mention voluntary work and other activities like training or the development of a new skill.
* If you have moved around much in your job you can mention that in your résumé because that would not be considered as job hopping. At times too much stagnation is bad and it is good to move around to take assignments on new projects. It shows your innate desire to learn more and it is positive if the company notices that you do not like to get stagnated. If you want to minimize areas of job hopping, you could group similar positions under one type of employment and promote yourself in an intelligent way.
* If you are suddenly transferred to a civilian’s position from a military position you have to do it with tact and skill. Civilian employers are not accustomed to military jargons and therefore they should be replaced with terms used in the corporate world. If you have a long military career, these might be so much a part of you that you may not realize you are using them. You have to show the resume to your colleagues in that case who can simmer it with civilian usage of words and make it more understandable by your employers. Military experience must have offered you advancement training and awards for performance which can be highlighted in your resume.
* If you have to have a transit from the corporate to the non-profit sector, then your innate desire and passion to work for the non-profit organization should speak highly in your resume. You should state clearly why this transition is being made and how your skills which you have developed all the way in the corporate sectors can help the non-profit organization in terms of promotions, correspondence and so on. If you are to make an enduring contribution in the non-profit sector you have to be devoted to work and you can show how through your patience and devotion in the corporate sector you had climbed up the rungs of success. The same can be replicated for the non-profit sector.
* Ultimately, it is the work that would count along with your other skills. If you can make it appear in your resume, the employer would get to know that hiring you he would get the person he wants. So designing and formatting your resume by covering the little flaws would be the best way to go about it. If you have a career change or other sort of job transits, draft out the best possible resume with a professional look and feel to make it to the next job.
